Croatia
Republic of Croatia (Republika Hrvatska), is a country at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Central Europe, and the Balkans. Its capital is Zagreb. Croatia is a member of United Nations, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and the Council of Europe, is a candidate for membership of the European Union and received a NATO membership invitation on 3 April 2008. On October 17, 2007 Croatia became a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2008-2009 term.
University of Rijeka
Croatia has a very long coastline and an internationally recognised Faculty for Maritime Studies at the University of Rijeka. The members of this department have been publishing the international "Journal of Maritime studies", which is a scientific journal that covers the field of maritime affairs and is published twice a year for many years. The University is also a member of the International Association of Maritime Universities. The co-director of this proposed ARW is a full professor at this University and on the Editorial Board of the Journal.
Opatija
The city of Opatija is surrounded on the inland side by a beautiful forest of laurel trees. Many examples of classic Croatian and Grand Austrian architecture are also in abundance. With a local population under 15,000, there is a small town feel to this city by the sea.
Opatija is at the center of what is known as the Opatija Riviera. Tourism dates back to 1844, when this tourist town attracted such 19th century notables as Anton Checkov, Isadora Duncan and Gustav Mahler.
In the old days, before it became a tourist center, Opatija was the typical hodge podge of streets and courtyards common to most sea towns of the era. But, in 1880, the Southern Railway Company decided to refurbish this seaport into a spectacular tourist Mecca.
Weather
The end of October is still quite warm in Croatia (as well as Opatija) and the participants will be able to combine their ARW work with some social activities to become familiar both with the country's culture as well as the University and its activities.
